Why AI recommends some brands and ignores others

Ask ChatGPT for the best option in your category and it names a few brands, then stops. Here's what separates the brands that get named from the ones that never come up.

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini for the best product or service in any category and you'll notice something: they don't give you ten links to explore. They name two or three brands, explain why, and stop.

If you're one of those brands, you're winning customers you never had to advertise to. If you're not, those conversations are happening without you — and you'd never know.

After running this test across hundreds of categories, we've found the recommended brands almost always share three traits. None of them are luck.

They show up in the sources AI trusts

AI assistants lean heavily on third-party sources: "best of" roundups, review sites, comparison articles, and forum discussions. When an assistant needs to recommend a project management tool or a consulting firm, it draws on what those sources agree about.

Brands that only talk about themselves on their own website rarely get named. Brands that appear on the lists AI already reads get named constantly. The first question to ask isn't "is my website good?" — it's "am I present where AI looks?"

Their websites answer questions directly

Pull up your homepage and ask: could a machine reading this page say, in one sentence, what you do, who it's for, and what it costs?

The brands AI recommends have pages that answer real questions in plain sentences. The brands it skips have beautiful pages, clever taglines — and no quotable answers. AI can't recommend what it can't understand.

They're described the same way everywhere

When your own site, your directory listings, and your press coverage all describe you the same way, AI repeats that description with confidence. When they conflict — one says "agency," another says "software," a third says something else — AI hedges, or leaves you out entirely.

Consistency isn't glamorous, but it's one of the strongest signals you can control.

What to do this week

Ask the major AI assistants the questions your customers ask, and write down who gets named. That list is your real competition in AI search. Then check yourself against the three traits above: are you in the trusted sources, are your pages quotable, are you described consistently?

That's exactly the work we do at Runwyre. If you'd rather see where you stand before doing any of it, book a free strategy call — we'll run the check with you, live.
